Stein Club to Hold Special Meeting about Executive Board 2013 Elections

(Washington, D.C.) The Gertrude Stein Democratic Club will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 7 pm in Room 120 of the John A. Wilson Building. The meeting will address the challenges to the Executive Board elections brought by Stein Club members about the status of recently joined members and the high number of first-time memberships (46) in the week prior to the Executive Board election. Specifically, it will address whether the unusually large number of new members who claimed a discounted special membership were actually eligible for that status. It will also address other concerns mentioned in the forthcoming legal memorandum. Additionally, the membership will decide whether or not to invalidate the election held on December 3rd of this month.

As an affiliate organization of the DC Democratic State Committee, after the Stein Club Executive Board received these challenges from members, it consulted the DC Democratic State Committee's General Counsel, Donald R. Dinan of Roetzel & Anderss, for legal guidance on the concerns raised by members and how the Board should proceed. After receiving Dinan's guidance and recommendation, the Executive Board voted to call a special meeting to present the findings to members and for the membership to vote whether or not to invalidate the election as a result of the findings. Any current executive board member whose election may be impacted by this decision did not vote in this matter.

According to Dinan, "...if one were to misrepresent their status in order to qualify for Special Membership and pay the lower dues, that misrepresentation would likewise disqualify the voter." Additionally, the General Counsel recommended, "...that the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club election held on December 3, 2012 be invalidated and the new elections be scheduled as soon as practicably possible once the integrity of the voter rolls has been confirmed."

A copy of Dinan's Memorndum will follow this notice.
