Stein Club Endorses Non-Incumbent

Washington, DC - Last night in the packed basement auditorium of Martin Luther King Jr. Public Library the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club endorsed their first non-incumbent candidate for the September Democratic Primary. Winning 60.8% of the vote on a 2nd ballot, Nate Bennett-Fleming became the Stein Club's endorsed candidate for DC Shadow Representative. Bennett-Fleming was running against incumbent Shadow Representative Mike Panetta, who has been endorsed by the Stein Club during both his 2006 and 2008 campaigns.

"We thank Representative Panetta for his support over the last four years and for the great work he continues to do in taking our campaign for voting rights, statehood, and legislative & budget autonomy to voters across the country. "

"Tonight's vote reflects a shift that I believe is happening within the District of Columbia, where we have younger voices standing up to take leadership. Nate Bennett-Fleming clearly has the support of his peers and a strong block of LGBT activists from across the city. People are excited about the energy, drive, and passion Nate is injecting into the statehood movement and the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club looks forward to joining with Mr. Bennett-Fleming in taking the District's fight for equality and self determination to the next level."
- Jeffrey Richardson, Stein Club President

"I am humbled by the Stein Club's decision to support my candidacy. This endorsement is significant for me because the "Stein Club", the leading voice of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Democrats in the District of Columbia, decided that Nate Bennett-Fleming was the best equipped candidate to protect the city's marriage equality laws from Congressional interference."

Earlier in the evening the Stein Club overwhelmingly endorsed Tommy Wells and Mary Cheh for re-election to the city council. Both candidates are currently running unopposed in the DC Democratic Primary.

At an endorsement meeting held on May 17, 2010 the Stein Club endorsed Jim Graham and Harry Thomas Jr. for re-election.
