Stein CLub Endorses Evans, Alexander, Panetta and Norton
Washington, DC - May 13, 2008 - The Gertrude Stein Democratic Club (Stein Club), the largest LGBT political organization in the District, endorsed Jacks Evans for City Council - Ward 2, Yvette Alexander for City Council - Ward 7, Mike Panetta for Shadow Representative, and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton for Delegate to the US House of Representatives.
The Stein Club held four endorsement votes at the May 12 meeting. A candidate for office must receive at least 60% of the vote of members present in order to receive the Stein Club's endorsement. All votes were conducted by secret ballot.
In the Ward 2 endorsement, Jack Evans received 87% of the vote (54 votes out of 62 total votes).
In the Ward 7 endorsement, the Stein Club endorsed Yvette Alexander by acclamation.
In the Delegate to US House of Representative endorsement, the Stein Club endorsed Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton by acclamation.
In the Shadow Representative endorsement, the Stein Club endorsed Mike Panetta by acclamation.
The Stein Club did not endorse any candidate for Shadow Senator. In the first vote, Paul Strauss received 52%, Phil Pannell received received 33%, Eugene Kinlow (who withdrew his candidacy at the meeting) received 8% and Robert Vinson Brannum received 7%. In a run-off vote, Phil Pannell received 54%, Paul Strauss received 44%, and No Endorsement received 2%.
"The Stein Club plays an important and visible role in the District's political and election process, as demonstrated by the large participation of our members in the endorsement meeting," said Mario Acosta-Velez, Stein Club President.
The Stein Club, founded in 1976, is a membership organization dedicated to growing the political participation, representation, and visibility of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community in the District of Columbia's political process. It is also the local organization of National Stonewall Democrats, a grassroots network connecting GLBT Democratic activists from all across the United States.
