Stein Club Congratulates Mayor-elect Fenty and other Winning Endorsed Candidates

Washington, DC - November 8, 2006 - The Gertrude Stein Democratic Club (Stein Club), the largest LGBT political organization in the District, congratulates Mayor-elect Adrian Fenty on his victory in the November 7 general election. Mayor-elect Fenty once again received extraordinary support throughout the city and from the LGBT community.

The Stein Club also congratulates the other winning, endorsed candidates, including Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Council Chair-elect Vincent Gray, Councilmember Jim Graham, Councilmember Phil Mendelson, Councilmember-elect Harry Thomas, Jr., Councilmember-elect Tommy Wells, Councilmember-elect Mary Cheh, Shadow Senator-elect Michael Brown, Shadow Representative-elect Mike Panetta, School board President-elect Robert Bobb, and School Board member-elect Lisa Raymond.

"We proudly celebrate the election of Councilmember Adrian Fenty as our next Mayor and enthusiastically look forward to supporting and working with his administration to address issues of importance to our diverse LGBT community and to advance our equal rights," said Mario Acosta-Velez, Stein Club President.

"Mayor-elect Fenty has shown a very strong commitment to support the LGBT community and we are excited about the opportunity to participate in the framing, implementation, and evaluation of policies and initiatives that will benefit the overall LGBT community," continued Acosta-Velez.

The Stein Club also looks forward to working with the City Council to promote legislative initiatives that will improve both the quality of life and civil rights for members of the LGBT community.

"The results of our City's elections are good news for our community. All the elected candidates support our community and believe in the importance of LGBT participation in the District's political and public policy process," concluded Acosta-Velez.

The Stein Club is proud of the strong participation of the LGBT community in this year's election and of the Club's role in helping to elect candidates who strongly support its objectives. In light of its commitment to support and work with the new Mayor and City Council, the Stein Club will continue to actively promote LGBT political participation in Washington, DC.

The Stein Club, founded in 1976, is a membership organization dedicated to growing the political participation, representation, and visibility of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community in the District of Columbia's political process. It is also the local organization of National Stonewall Democrats, a grassroots network connecting LGBT Democratic activists from all across the United States.
