President called the meeting to order at 7:15 pm.
President’s Report
President welcomed members and special guests. He began his report by thanking all members for participating in the mayoral candidates forum and endorsement meeting. He then indicated that most of the agenda will be dedicated to the endorsements for Delegate to US House of Representatives, Council Chair and Council At-Large. He then proceeded to explain the rules of the day and began the endorsement process.
The Stein Club held three separate debates with the Democratic candidates. After the candidates debates, members engaged in a discussion of candidates and then proceeded to voting.
Delegate to the House of Representatives Endorsement
The results were the following:
90 total votes
Eleanor Holmes Norton – 64 votes – 71%
Andy Miscuk – 14 votes – 16%
Other – 1 vote – 1%
No Endorsement – 11 votes – 12%
City Council At-Large Endorsement*
The results were:
112 total votes
Scott Bolden – 39 votes – 35%
Phil Mendelson – 67 votes – 60%
No Endorsement – 6 votes – 5%
Phil Mendelson received the official endorsement by the Stein Club. (see note at end of minites).
Council Chair Endorsement
The results were:
11 total votes
Vincent Gray – 45 votes – 41%
Kathy Patterson – 58 votes – 52%
Other – 1 vote – 1%
No Endorsement – 7 votes – 6%
Run-off vote: 90 votes total
Vincent Gray – 38 votes – 41%
Kathy Patterson – 47 votes – 51%
No Endorsement – 7 votes – 8%
RESULT: NO ENDORSEMENT
Resolutions:
The Stein Club passed a resolution to make a contribution of $2,000 to Linda Cropp for Mayor campaign.
The Stein Club passed a resolution to make a $1,000 contribution to Phil Mendelson for Council At-Large campaign.
*Note: After the endorsement meeting (next day), the Executive Committee realized that there was an error in the calculations for the Council At-Large endorsement, and concluded there was no official endorsement in that race. Therefore, Councilmember Phil Mendelson did not receive the Stein Club's endorsement.
