Stein Club Endorses Bobb, Raymond, and Patterson for School Board / Endorses Democratic Slate
Washington, DC - October 11, 2006 - The Gertrude Stein Democratic Club (Stein Club), the largest LGBT political organization in the District, endorsed the following candidates on Monday, October 10th:
Robert C. Bobb - President of Board of Education
Lisa Raymond - District III Member of Board of Education
Jacque D. Patterson - District IV Member of Board of Education
A candidate for office must receive at least 60% of the vote of members present in order to receive the Stein Club's endorsement. All votes were conducted by secret ballot.
In the first vote, Robert C. Bobb received 60.98%, Jacque D. Patterson received 74.36%. On a second run-off ballot, Lisa Raymond received 66.67%.
The Stein Club also passed a resolution to endorse the entire Democratic slate, which includes the following candidates: Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (US Congres), Councilmember Adrian Fenty (Mayor), Councilmember Vincent Gray (Council Chair), Councilmember Phil Mendelson (Council At-Large), Councilmember Jim Graham (Ward 1), Mary Cheh (Ward 3), Harry Thomas Jr. (Ward 5), Tommy Wells (Ward 6), Michael Brown (Shadow Senator), and Mike Panetta (Shadow Representative).
"Our endorsement of three candidates for the School Board sends a strong message that the Stein Club considers education an important issue in our city and wants to see a School Board committed to improving our educational system and ensuring LGBT students have equal acess to educational opportunities," said Mario Acosta-Velez, President of the Stein Club.
"The Stein Club is proud to endorse all Democratic nominees. We are committed to bringing our membership and LGBT community together to support the Democratic slate, and hope to see all candidates at our Unity Party" Acosta-Velez concluded.
The Stein Club, founded in 1976, is a membership organization dedicated to growing the political participation, representation, and visibility of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community in the District of Columbia's political process. It is also the local organization of National Stonewall Democrats, a grassroots network connecting LGBT Democratic activists from all across the United States.
