Linda Cropp Receives Stein Club's Mayoral Endorsement
Washington, DC - June 14, 2006 – The Gertrude Stein Democratic Club (Stein Club) endorsed Linda Cropp for Mayor of the District of Columbia at its June 12th Mayoral endorsement meeting. The Stein Club is the largest political organization in the District representing the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) Community.
Linda Cropp received 62 % of the vote (106 votes out of 171 total votes) on a second ballot, run-off vote. A candidate for office must receive at least 60% of the vote of members present in order to receive the Stein Club’s endorsement. All votes were conducted by secret ballot.
“The Stein Club appreciates the participation of each of the Mayoral candidates in the Stein Club forums and meetings. The Stein Club is particularly impressed by the commitment of all the Democratic candidates to GLBT issues,” said Mario Acosta-Velez, Stein Club’s President.
"The final endorsement of Ms. Cropp was the result of an open and transparent process. The Stein Club ensured that each candidate present at the meeting had an equal opportunity to address the Stein Club’s members and seek their support,” continued Acosta-Velez.
“As President of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, I look forward to working with Linda Cropp’s Campaign for Mayor,” Acosta Velez concluded.
“As demonstrated by the large participation of Stein Club members in our endorsement meeting, the Stein Club considers the leadership of this city a critical issue and hopes to play an important role in this year’s Mayoral election,” said Darren Bowie, Stein Club's Vice President for Political Affairs.
The Stein Club, founded in 1976, is a membership organization dedicated to growing the political participation, representation, and visibility of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community in the District of Columbia’s political process. It is also the local organization of National Stonewall Democrats, a grassroots network connecting GLBT Democratic activists from all across the United States.
