Stein Club Commends ABC Board's Decision on Be Bar

Washington, DC - May 3, 2006 – The Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, the largest LGBT Democratic political organization in the District of Columbia, today applauded the ABC Board’s decision to not recognize two protests to the alcohol license application by the Be Bar, a proposed bar to be located at 1318 9th Street NW, that were presented separately by the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2C and a group of eight citizens.

“We are pleased that the ABC Board properly applied the District’s laws and reached a decision that supported the Be Bar’s application and the owners’ right to open the bar in the Shaw neighborhood,” said Mario Acosta-Velez, Stein Club’s President.

“Based on public statements by opponents of the bar, opposition to Be Bar’s license application appeared to be based solely on the fact that the bar will serve the LGBT community. This shameful intolerance has no place in the District of Columbia,” continued Acosta-Velez.

The Stein Club, founded in 1976, is a membership organization dedicated to growing the political participation, representation, and visibility of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community in the District of Columbia’s political process. The Stein Club is committed to addressing a variety of issues impacting our diverse LGBT community.
