Gertrude Stein Democratic Club Announces Mayoral Candidates Forum

Washington, DC – April 20, 2006 – The Gertrude Stein Democratic Club (Stein Club), the largest LGBT Democratic political organization in the District, today announced the 2006 Mayoral Candidates Forum. As part of its political platform, the Stein Club presents the Forum in order to highlight important issues impacting the LGBT community and to learn about the candidates’ positions on these issues and on the future of our city.

The Mayoral Candidates Forum will be moderated by Mr. Colby King. All candidates have been confirmed.

“The Mayoral Candidates Forum will be an opportunity to listen to the mayoral candidates as they discuss and debate issues impacting the District’s diverse LGBT community, as well as their overall vision for the District of Columbia,” said Mario Acosta-Velez, Stein Club’s President.

“The Forum will also promote the participation of the LGBT community in this year’s mayoral race and increase our visibility and presence as a significant voting bloc in the District’s election,” continued Acosta-Velez.

“The participation in the Forum by every mayoral candidate demonstrates our community’s political influence,” said Darren Bowie, Stein Club’s Vice President for Political Affairs.

The Stein Club presents the Forum in collaboration with the DC Coalition, PEN - Metro DC's LGBT Chamber of Commerce, Human Rights Campaign, and the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

The Stein Club, founded in 1976, is a membership organization dedicated to growing the political participation, representation, and visibility of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community in the District of Columbia’s political process. The Stein Club is committed to mobilizing the LGBT community to help elect candidates sympathetic to the LGBT community, and addressing a variety of issues impacting our diverse LGBT community.
