Stein Club Elects 2006 Officers

Washington, D.C. - On Monday, November 14th, 2005 the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club (Stein Club) held elections for its Executive Committee at its monthly meeting held at the John A. Wilson District building.

Elected as President is Mr. Mario Acosta-Velez. Mr. Acosta-Velez, a longtime civil rights advocate for the Latino and LGBT communities, currently serves as Vice Chair of the District of Columbia Commission on Human Rights and Chair of the Commission's Outreach and Education Committee. He also serves on the District of Columbia Workforce Investment Council as an Executive Committee member and Chair of the Universal Access Committee, is a current Board Member of the ACLU-National Capital Area, and is an elected board member of the National Stonewall Democrats. Mario previously served as the Stein Club's Vice President for Political Affairs and Secretary. Mario is a graduate of the Harvard's Executives in State and Local Government Program and is a member of Leadership Greater Washington. A long-term resident of Ward 2, Mario has two master's degrees in Public Administration and in Political Science, and is a diversity and strategic planning consultant.

Elected as 2nd Vice President of Administration is Ms. Claire Lucas. Ms. Lucas, an openly Lesbian Democratic party activist and fundraiser, currently serves on the National Finance Board of the Democratic National Committee, and most recently served as one of John Kerry's Finance Chairs, Co-Chair of Kerry For President Gay and Lesbian Fundraising and Chair of the Democratic National Committee's (DNC) Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council (GLLC). Prior to these positions, she served as National Deputy of Finance for Howard Dean for America. Claire is currently a member of the DC Democratic State Democratic committee. She is also an elected board member of the National Stonewall Democrats. She was instrumental in developing the DNC's Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council, and has worked on behalf of the Human Rights Campaign, the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, and many other progressive organizations and Democratic candidates. Claire has a PHD in Health Economics from Johns Hopkins and she owns a home in Ward 3.

Elected as Treasurer is Mr. Darrin Glymph. Mr. Glymph is the current Chairman of the District of Columbia Small and Local Business Opportunity Commission and also serves as Vice Chair of the Center for Family and Youth Investment. Darrin is a longtime Democratic Activist and a founding member of the Gay Men of African Decent (GMAD). Darrin is a Municipal Finance Attorney practicing in Washington, DC and owns a home in Ward 4.

Elected as Secretary is Christopher Dyer is the founder of Youth Pride Alliance, the organization that produces an annual Youth Pride Day event for the LGBT community. He is currently serving as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner representing Logan Circle and is also the chair of the social marketing committee for the newly formed Crystal Meth Working Group of Metropolitan DC. In addition to Youth Pride, Chris has served on the planning committee for Capital Pride for ten years and has been a member of Mayor Anthony Williams GLBT advisory committee. He is the recipient of the 2003 Capital Pride Hero Award and the 1999 Gene Frey Award for outstanding volunteer service for the Whitman Walker Clinic.

The position of 1st Vice President for Political Affairs will be elected at the January 2006 meeting.

The Stein Club, founded in 1976, is a membership organization dedicated to growing the political participation, representation, and visibility of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community in the District of Columbia's political process. The Stein Club is an affiliate of the National Stonewall Democrats.
