Stein Club Denounces Bush Call for Marriage Ban
(January 20, 2004)
Washington, DC - If you were one of the estimated 25% of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community who cast your vote for the "compassionate conservative" George W. Bush in Nov. 2000, we say shame on you.
We the members of Gertrude Stein find it abhorrent that this president would use a national address to cater to the radical "unchristian" right wing. "This address must have been ghost written by Rev. Lou Shelton and proof read by Pat Robertson" said Stein President, David Meadows. In the President's remarks discussing sexually transmitted disease, he did not mention that Americans are dying of AIDS because his administration has cut funding for health care that would have paid for medicines that easily would have kept them alive.
Adding insult to injury, his proposal to fund sexual abstinence programs is ignorant and inhuman. To top off the verbiage of hate and denial the President used this bully pulpit to not only pave, but to black top and line the way for Congress to take the "constitutional approach to protect the sanctity of marriage". If ever the discussion of Gay Marriage was on the table, tonight the President has served up one platter of intolerance and bigotry to every single LGBT American.
