Stein Club Applauds LGBT Affairs Bill Signing
(January 31, 2006)
Washington, DC - The Gertrude Stein Democratic Club (Stein Club), the largest GLBT political organization in the District, today applauded the signing by Mayor Anthony Williams of the legislation to establish the Office of GLBT Affairs, originally introduced by Councilmember Jim Graham. Mayor Williams singed the legislation on Monday, January 30, making the Office of GLBT Affairs a permanent cabinet-level office within the Executive Office of the Mayor.
"The Stein Club fully supported the establishment of the Office of GLBT Affairs as a permanent mechanism through which diverse sectors of the District's GLBT community can work together to address public policy problems facing the community," said Mario Acosta-Velez, Stein Club's President.
"The Office of GLBT Affair is now an important element of our collective efforts to advocate for and shape government-based initiatives that are responsive to issues important to the GLBT community. It is critical that the Office of GLBT Affairs implements a comprehensive outreach effort to include all sectors of our community in developing a unified agenda," concluded Acosta-Velez.
The Stein Club congratulates Darlene Nipper as the new Director of the Office of GLBT Affairs, and looks forward to working with her, the Mayor's Office, the City Council, and community organizations and individuals to advance the interests of the GLBT community.
