Minutes of October 18, 2004 Meeting

Call to Order

President David Meadows called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm.

President's Report

President Meadows welcomed meeting attendees and also welcomed Mrs. Wanda Lockridge, the new Chair of the Democratic State Committee. He proceeded to read the agenda for the meeting and highlighted the fact that we will have a dialogue with candidates fro the Board of Elections. He then explained the process for this dialogue and emphasized the fact that the meeting is not an endorsement meeting.

He talked about the work of Stein members and volunteers in the Kerry/Edwards campaign, especially the bus trips to Philadelphia. This has been one of the most important contributions of the Stein Club to the Kerry campaign.

Stein members present approved the minutes from the September 9, 2004 meeting unanimously.

Treasurer's Report

The treasurer presented his report, which reflected a beginning balance of $4,549.44, with expenses totaling $1,836.87, and fees totaling $60.00. The ending balance was $2,652.57.

Vice-President Report

Vice President Lewis opened the dialogue with candidates for the Board of Elections. He highlighted the importance of their presence at the Stein meeting and how critical it is for them to consider the issues affecting GLBT students at DC public schools. President Meadows added that it is important to see policies and actions that would support the rights of GLBT students to study in an environment free of discrimination.

The candidates then engaged in an extended dialogue with stein members in which they presented their main positions and answered questions specifically related to LGBT issues. The dialogue was one of great importance and emphasized that in the future the Stein Club should consider having an endorsement of this important city-wide race.

Old Business

No old business was presented.

New Business

A motion was presented to have the Stein Club support efforts by members of the GLBT community to request the DC government waive the fees established for the 17th street High Heels Race. The motion passed.

Adjournment

Upon motion, the Stein Club voted to adjourn the meeting.
