Minutes of July 18, 2005 Meeting

Call to Order

President David Meadows called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

President's Report

President Meadows reported that he testified before the DC Council Committee on Government Operations in favor of proposed legislation establishing a permanent Office of LGBT Affairs. President Meadows reported that John Wallace, the Director of the Mayor's Office of Community Affairs, testified in opposition to such legislation on the grounds that the Mayor, rather than the Council, should decide which offices or positions to create within the Executive Office of the Mayor.

Peter Share asked whether the Stein Club had gone on record to express its displeasure at the Mayor's position. Mr. Share made a motion that the Stein Club send a letter to the Mayor, with copies to Robert Bobb, Anita Bonds, and John Wallace, stating that the Club is disappointed that the Mayor changed his position on the establishment of a permanent Office of LGBT Affairs without consulting the Club, and that the Club is disappointed that the Mayor has not appointed anyone to head the Office of LGBT Affairs. The motion passed unanimously.

Kurt Vondran made a motion that the Stein Club issue a press release and testify in favor of the DC Human Rights Act Clarification Amendment. The motion passed unanimously.

New/Unfinished Business

Peter Share asked about the status of the Club's efforts to set an agenda for the coming year. President Meadows responded that this would be discussed at the Club's September meeting. President Meadows announced that the Club will not meet in August.

Adjournment

Upon motion, the Club voted to adjourn the meeting.
