Minutes of April 12, 2004 Meeting

Call to Order

President David Meadows called the meeting to order.

President's Report

President Meadows welcomed meeting attendees and special guests. He mentioned that the Executive Committee met with the Mayor to discuss several issues facing the LGBT community. The meeting addressed topics such as same-sex marriage, council legislation on LGBT issues, FEMS training, Democratic State Committee representation, town hall meeting on LGBT issues and Salvation Army, and Office of LGBT Affairs.

Peter Share recommended that the Stein Club sends a letter to the Blade regarding the fact that the points expressed to the Mayor regarding same-sex marriage are not a formal policy of the Stein Club, but a reflection of the feelings expressed individually by members at the meetings.

President Meadows also talked about the upcoming Stein Annual Reception scheduled for June 9, and distributed copies of the sponsorship forms to members. He also mentioned that Stein will have booths at Youth Pride, Black Pride and Capital Pride. He also said that Stein will march with the Mayor this year at the Pride Parade.

President Meadows then asked the membership to approve the minutes from the March 8, 2004 meeting. The members present approved the minutes.

Treasurer's report
The Treasurer provided the financial report to the Stein Club, which presented a beginning balance of $2,814.46. With expenses totaling $279.00, fees $26.00, and deposits $2,825, the ending balance presented was $5,334.46.

Vice President Report

Vice President Lewis reported on the scheduled endorsement meetings, which are as follows:

Shadow Elections (May), Council Members (July), DC State Committee (August)

Guest Presentation

Sean Tenner, Executive Director of DC Democracy Fund, addressed the membership. He talked about the work of the Democracy Fund in promoting full voting rights in Congress for the District of Columbia. He also discussed the presidential election and the council members elections.

Old Business

President Meadows mentioned that the DSC By-laws Committee has compiled data on LGBT representation in other democratic committee around the nation. They plan to have a vote on Stein representation at the May or June meeting.

New Business

Members recommended that the Stein Club invites Corporation Counsel Signorelli to address the membership. President Meadows will follow up on this recommendation.

Vice President Lewis mentioned that he attended a meeting the Fire Chief, in which they discussed the status of diversity training in the department and plans to train the whole department's workforce.

Jeff Hops mentioned that he will be working to set up a LGBT volunteer day at Kerry Headquarters in DC. He will send an email about this initiative.

Upon motion, the Stein Club voted to adjourn the meeting.
